ST. CLOUD — The fall athletic season is underway for St. Cloud State University.
Volleyball, cross-county and men’s and women’s soccer are scheduled to start next week.
The SCSU volleyball team is the defending NSIC regular season and NSIC tournament champion. The head coach Chad Braegelmann says as they return three All-Americans, he’s interested to see which players step into new roles.
You really watch what these young women do as they get a chance to have a real chance to make an impact on the floor. I’m delighted to see that some of these women will be able to develop and have the chance to play this season.
Phoebia Rossi led the NSIC in blocks last season. She says they have high standards following the success the program has had in recent years.
We are really focused on consistency this year. We had a crisis at the end of last season. So, heading into training this season, we focused on preparation so we could hit our stride at the right time.
The Huskies open the season Thursday against Oklahoma Baptist at Halenbeck Hall.
SCSU men’s soccer team returns full roster from last season, including junior Vuk Mastilovicwho started all 18 games for the Huskies last season.
He says as a veteran he knows he will be seen as the leader.
As one of the older guys on the team, I want to take the next step as a leader and set the tone for the younger guys coming in.
The Huskies continue to add talent to the roster, with nine incoming freshmen. The head coach Sean Holmes said as the program continues to grow, it is important to remember patience.
This is an opportunity to build something. We take the fact that SCSU is the premier DII football program in the state very seriously. We hope other schools will follow our path and see this as the growth of soccer.
The men’s soccer team opens its season against non-conference opponent South Dakota School of Mines next Friday.
