Houston returns home to welcome 2022 NWSL Challenge Cup champion to North Carolina

Houston returns home for the second home game of the regular season and the first in nearly a month. The Dash enter Sunday’s game with a 2-1-1 record and sit in fourth place in the league standings. Sunday’s game is the first meeting between the two teams in 2022. Last season, the two teams met twice during the 2021 regular season, both won by Houston. The final match took place on October 10, 2021 at the PNC Stadium and was a 4-1 win with a brace from the forward Rachel Daly.

The Dash are coming off a 2-0 win over Portland Thorns on Saturday. Houston took a 1-0 lead at minute 45+3 of the first half on Daly’s boot. Before Nichelle Prince found Daly running down the left side, Daly made some moves past the Portland defense in the penalty area and beat the goalie to give Houston the lead before halftime. In the middle of the second half midfield Sophie Schmidt extended Houston’s lead past the defender Haley Hanson set up Schmidt with a round-trip pass into the penalty area. Schmidt slipped the ball just past the Thorns keeper at the near post as she fell after being hit by a Portland defender.

North Carolina is coming off a 1-0 loss at home to San Diego Wave FC. Striker Alex Morgan scored, which ended up being the game-winning goal, late in the first half to put Wave ahead of Courage 1-0. After winning the 2022 NWSL Challenge Cup, Courage had a slow start to the regular season, losing their first three games. Despite the result against the Wave, the Courage shot San Diego 14-8 and led with 58 percent possession.

The Dash will host the Orlando Pride on June 3 for the second consecutive home game of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT at PNC Stadium. Fans interested in attending the match can purchase tickets here.
