From dad sandals and Bottega-inspired ankle boots to divisive chunky sneakers, the fashion crowd is making the case for “ugly” shoes. And leading the pack, clogs have returned to our wardrobe to become one of the shoe styles for this summer.

In keeping with 13th century Dutch roots, clogs are characterized by their slip-on design, open back, wooden sole, and slightly raised, rounded toe.

But while once associated with practical work, the style has since evolved from a farmer’s shoe of choice to a fashion statement.

Contemporary versions of the age-old shoe were launched in the spring collections of Hermès and Louis Vuitton last year, with designers such as Chanel and Dior quickly following suit. Now the casual slip-on dominates the high street and our Instagram feeds.

Adored by Kendall Jenner, Mia Regan and Kaia Geber, Birkenstock’s Boston clogs have quickly become cult thanks to their comfort-focused design, while Croc’s rubbery clogs have become one of fashion’s most polarizing trends. Balenciaga even having an ongoing runway collaboration with the brand.

Free People culver city clogs

There’s a lot to love about these Free People clogs with their fashionable yet classic design, now a mainstay in our summer wardrobe. Retaining all the hallmarks of the clog, including a soft rounded beige leather upper and wooden sole, there are the added contemporary details of the contrasting mahogany adjustable buckle, nailhead trim and platform design. shape that gives you just the right amount of height. As well as the cool aesthetic, we found this pair the easiest to walk on with the split wood platform offering flexibility and comfort – even when walking on cobblestones on vacation (which is no small feat ).

Asos Design Helen Mid Heel Clogs with Daisy Trim

Better: Year 2000 inspired clogs

Evaluation: 8/10

Inspired by the 2000s revival, Asos’ Helen sandals are a fun spin on the classic clog. All the signatures are there in the form of the chunky wooden sole, leather exterior and open back – but the open toe and Y2K hits of a chunky buckle strap and colorful flowers add contemporary detail. An ideal pair for summer, the clog and sandals hybrid is perfect for adding a retro touch to your warm-weather ensembles with the yellow finish that complements most items in your wardrobe. And beyond their aesthetics, the clogs were surprisingly supportive and adjustable to your feet thanks to the functional buckle.

Maje leather clogs

Better: Leather slip-ons

Evaluation: 8/10

Although inspired by the classic style, this pair of Maje leather clogs is resolutely modern. Ticking the box for comfort and slip-on appeal, the sheepskin-lined design borders on slippers, but the gold buckle and stud details keep them from being a lounging pair. Boasting the same preppy feel as a pair of loafers, clogs are perfect for dressing down a simple look with jeans and a t-shirt, or with white socks and a mini skirt for a polished summer ensemble.

Asos Design Frog Premium Suede Platform Clogs

Better: Suede clogs

Evaluation: 8/10

Another contemporary iteration of clogs, this Asos Design pair fits perfectly into our summer wardrobe – complementing everything from jeans to floaty midi dresses or micro-hemmed skirts thanks to its minimalist open-toe design. The wood-effect sole features a light beige finish and chunky design that elevates the look of the shoe, while the faux suede upper is adorned with stud fastenings. Our only complaint was how long it took to get used to walking in the pair, due to the heavy sole and lack of heel support. But patience is a virtue, and after a few wears, we felt comfortable getting hold of it.

Classic Crocs, Celery

Better: Rubber clogs

Evaluation: 8/10

Love them or hate them, Crocs are back. We’ll admit we were in the second half before trying a pair for ourselves – and even though we still can’t enough get on board to carry them out, we box board with their comfort levels around the house.

Made from a flexible, rubber-like material and the company’s “Croslite” technology, the shoes promise to mold to your feet – and they did. Combine that with the heel strap for a more secure fit and vents, and we can see why they’ve become a casual style staple. We’ve chosen to lean into the “ugly” with the Celery Green colourway, but the shoes are also available in 27 other shades. Although we won’t be wearing them to the pub anytime soon, we might just put them on for the post office.

Birkenstock Boston clogs

Better: For comfort

Evaluation: 9/10

As we all left confinement and loungewear behind, the Boston clog from Birkenstock became increasingly popular as a slipper-like shoe that was socially acceptable to wear outside the home. Demonstrative of their popularity, dupes have popped up on the high street, but of course you can’t beat the original.

“Ugly” in every way, the Bostons have gone from the type of shoe your grandfather would wear to a staple in runway model wardrobes. The soft sockliner and extra foam layer help mold to the foot, and there’s even the helpful choice of a narrow or regular fit. We love the taupe colourway the most, with the design adding on-trend neutrals to your ensemble. Take note of Kendall Jenner and pair yours with straight jeans and a white tank top.

Toast Kitty clogs

Better: Classic clogs

Evaluation: 8/10

This minimalist design from Toast retains all of the clog’s signatures with the design’s clumsy wooden sole, open back, and rounded, turned-up closed toe. We love the contrasting effect of the natural wood finish and the beige vegetable-tanned leather upper, with the openwork seams adding detail. The slip-on shoe offers added functionality with the waterproof alder wood sole and premium leather that will soften and mold to your feet over time. We found them comfortable and cocooning on our feet and thanks to the thin sole they were a breeze to walk on.

Mango studded leather clogs

Better: Black leather clog

Evaluation: 9/10

With a black leather finish and trendy studded trim, this Mango pair is a stylish addition to your wardrobe. The soft cowhide leather upper provides the most comfortable fit of all the clogs we tried, which helped with getting used to walking in the pair, while the wooden platform sole and block heel add trendy details. Due to the black finish, they complement most ensembles – adding a casual touch to your look. If you’re looking to tap into the clog trend in a low-key way, Mango’s leather slip-ons are perfect.
